Baby Boy Da Prince -- Across the Water

It's been a little while, but now we can add another good rapper to the New Orleans area. Baby Boy Da Prince's first single "The Way I Live" is getting a good following and definitely a catchy song. The album sounds like a new take on what Cash Money albums were sounding like in the late 90's, even including former Cash Money beat maker Mannie Fresh. So far hip hop music has been quite dismal this year, but BBDP has released a pretty good album to change things. Now this album is not phenomenal in any means, but definitely stands out. Most tracks are loaded with good beats and plenty of horns. BBDP even goes as far as writing the song "Rich Boy" partially sampling the chorus from Hall & Oates. This album is for fans of the old Cash Money and people still doing the Nolia Clap. Standouts: Naw Meen, Lock Me Down, Rollin to Det, Rich Boy

MIMS --Music Is My Savior

MIMS debut album was viewed as one of the most anticipated rap albums of the year. Most tracks on the album are completely hit or miss. However even a good track can be ruined by him restating "This is why I'm Hot." Okay we all know that the record blew up and that it was a hot track, but MIMS repeats this line in about four songs. This actually ruins most tracks, for instance "They Don't Want to Play" ft. Bun B is a decent song until you hear him toss that line in. The album is hard to define based on the fact that no song is stellar other than the first single, and there are only a handful of decent tracks. Overall the album isn't a complete loss, but don't expect anyone to put it on the top rap albums of the year or even anticipate his next LP. The album is still loaded good beats. Much like the lyrics to the first single, the whole album is music that you could have playing in the background when doing something, but it will never take center stage. Songs of interested: Big Black Train, Cop It, Just Like That, I Did You Wrong

Rich Boy--Rich Boy

By now if you haven't heard "Throw Some D's" a thousand times then you are either deaf or you stay at home watching CMT. The ironic thing for the latter people is it is written by Rich Boy from good ol' sweet home Alabama. Upon first listen to the album one thought comes to mind instantaneously with each song, "Wow this would be horrible without the beats." There may not be a single track other than the first single that brings something new to the game. We have all heard the same references to how hard, much of a baller, and how many girls that Rich Boy uses throughout the entire record. One thing that helps to make up for it is the fact that nearly every beat is much better than anything Rich Boy should be allowed to rap over. With song production from Polow da Don, David Banner, and Lil' Jon the record had the opportunity to make the years finest. To keep myself out of the "Regionalist Hater" category I will say that the New Orleans, Houston, Miami, and Atlanta rap scenes all seem to be continually putting out great rap albums...but let's be honest, Rich Boy's accent is too much to handle. Yes it is 100% necessary for a rapper to use sections of songs to remind the listener how street he is with a little spoken word. However, Rich Boy could call out Lucifer and still sound ridiculous. It's great for a rapper to put a new area on the map, but the world isn't ready for that Alabama mouth. All in all the album is still good for decent trunk bumping music, just don't expect to find something that will blow you away. Songs worth hearing: Let's Get this Paper, And I Love You, Role Models, Throw Some D's Remix

Maximo Park -- Our Earthly Pleasures

Well the long awaited Maximo Park album "Our Earthly Pleasures" leaked this week. Coming from a band that released what i considered to be the best album of 2005 as well as a great album consisting of "Missing Songs." With this being said hope and expectation were both very high for this release. The earlier leaked single "Our Velocity" continued to raise excitement. The song features the same energy and strength of "A Certain Trigger." Sadly though this song apparently consumed most of the energy of the full album. This by no mean implies that the album is a failure. There are plenty of great Maximo tracks on the album, there just isn't the same overall tone as the earlier releases. The excuse of musical growth can be used, but it seems only apparent on about half of the album. In reality if another band released this album I might be praising them, but having known their genius there is a bit of a let down. A slow song like "Books from Boxes" still has great sound and stellar vocals. Maximo is known for there seemingly straightforward lyrical approach. This apparently went haywire at one point during the writing/recording process when the lyrics to a chorus were written as "five times five equals twenty-five, don't you know your times tables by now." A clear standout is "The Unshockable" with it's unique musicality. A great combination of distortion and NES styled dramatic keyboard. Vocals are exactly what they should be by the time the chorus hits. Overall the record is still a definite buy...plus when it finally comes out us Statesmen will be blessed with two more songs. Fingers crossed for cocaine and coffee filled sounds from the newbies. Songs of interest: Our Velocity. Books from Boxes, Girls Who Play Guitars, The Unshockable
